Setting Intentions with Astrological Moon Phases

Part of everyday magical living is learning how to work with Moon phases to set your intentions. We can use the phases of the Moon as a checkpoint for our life. It is a natural timekeeper for helping us focus on the ebb and flow of the energy of the Universe. By working in harmony with the current lunar energy we utilize moon magic and see better results with the Law of Attraction.

New and Full Moon Magic

Although there are eight distinct phases of the Moon let’s keep it simple and focus on the energy of the New and Full Moon phases.

During the New Moon phase, the Moon is closest to the Earth and completely dark. This is a time of introspection and getting clear about the things you want to create or manifest in your life. Just as farmers know that seeds planted in the Earth take best during the New Moon, we can also plant the seeds of our intentions that will sprout with the coming full moon.

In addition to seeding intentions, the New Moon is a time of embracing new projects, ideas, thoughts, and changes we want to bring into our life. It is a time of hope and faith as well as a renewal of our commitments. The New Moon phase is when we “start fresh”.

The Full Moon phase is when we can see an entire side of the Moon and it is a powerful time of illumination, clarity, and focus. This is when we celebrate and connect deeply with our feminine energies and work with dreams, intuition, and divination.

We can use the Full Moon energy to light our way and gain insight into what is working or is not working on our path. Use this time to release the things that have been blocking your energy and focus on rituals for personal growth or spiritual development.

Not sure what to manifest and receive? Consider aligning your intentions to the lunar phase as it moves through each sign of the zodiac.

Moon Rituals and Intention Setting

Rituals are a way of connecting. Staying full present at the moment and setting an intention is the key to successful ritual. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want. Truly. Don’t let anyone else, any book, or any “expert” tell you it has to be done a certain way. This is all about you and your connection to the moon.

So how do you start?

Consider the following a guideline for creating your own new moon ritual. Make it as streamlined or woo-woo as you like. Use the worksheet from your Moon Journal to write down your ritual and keep it as a guide for future dates.

  • Clean your space
  • Cleanse  your body
  • Create your space
    • Incorporate sound (ringing bowl, bell, music,  etc), scent (incense, reed or mist diffusers, etc), and sight (candle, Himalayan salt crystal lamp, fairy lights, etc).
  • Ground and Center
    • Take deep cleansing breaths, clear your mind and get firmly rooted in the moment.
  • Set your intention by writing it down or work your divination such as oracle cards, tarot spread, etc.
  • Give thanks & release
